Bioorthogonal chemistry refers to chemical reactions that can occur within a living organism without interfering with native biological processes or other biomolecules. Coined by Carolyn Bertozzi in 2003, these reactions involve non-native chemical groups, are typically high-yielding and selective, and are essential for applications in chemical biology, such as bio-imaging, drug development, and disease targeting.
